By Mohit sexena-Countering the Trinamool Congress' slogan for change in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday accused the opposition party of indulging in "politics of violence" bereft of any programme for development. e. But what change? We have given land to the rural poor. We have restored the dignity of school teachers. Does it mean that all this will change ? Will it be good for the state if they come to power?" he told an election rally at Ajaynagar under his constituency Jadavpur.
Accusing Trinamool of spreading violence in the state, he said the party was in league with Gorkha Janamukti Morcha which was fomenting violence in Darjeeling and also supporting the Maoists.
"They (TC) are doing politics of violence. They have no programme (for the state's development). We need a government that will maintain peace and take the state ahead in the road to development," he said.
Referring to Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee's performance as railway minister, Bhattarjee said though she had laid foundation stones for 64 railway projects none of these were going to come up.
"It will be a problem if the Railways continue to perform the way it is performing."
The state under Left Front has received an investment of Rs 1500 crore during 2010, while a Rs 35,000 crore steel plant of the Jindal group was coming up at Shalboni, the chief minister said, adding that a large number of SME units were also coming up.
Earlier, addressing a workers' meet, he said the state's "largest" factory would come up at Singur once the Front came to power for the 8th time and dared the Opposition to resist it "if it had the courage."
Bhattacharjee said that while trying to have more industries in the state to generate employment opportunities, his government had also been careful to look after the interest of those in the unorganised sectors.
"We have taken up a pension scheme for those working in the unorganised sector. Under the scheme, the beneficiary and the government would provide Rs 20 each per month so that when the person covered is unable to work any more, he will retire with Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 2 lakh."
He said while 30 lakh beneficiaries have already been brought under the scheme, the target was to cover 50 lakh.
"A medical scheme would also have to be introduced for them as it is difficult for them to finance the high cost of treatment of certain diseases," he said.
The government, the chief minister said, was also taking steps to strengthen the PDS.
"You have elected me (in the last Assembly polls) as an MLA so that I can work for you. I have tried my best to build roads, improve water supply and set up schools and colleges. I promise to remain with you in your joy and sorrow," Bhattacharjee said.
A large number of CPI(M) activists carrying party flags and banners flanked Bhattacharjee as he toured the by-lanes of his constituency.
He attended 10 separate functions, including party workers' meetings and mass contact programmes.
